I absolutely love how this came out as did my son who pinched it. The waffle design he says looks like chainmail but for me using a large (size 7.5) hook made this come out so soft. He did request one in a single colour but as I don't like mixing wool brands if I can help it he had to make do with what I had but I actually really like the darker ends and when he wears it he does agree with me.
You can learn waffle stitch here: http://thecrochetcrowd.com/waffle/ There is also a video tutorial for the front post DC which is the main stitch of this pattern.
This is a highly textured stitch pattern which would be amazing as a baby blanket BUT like the basket weave stitch it is a wool eater, and needs much more than you think, so if you are trying it make sure you allow extra wool. A larger hook works for me because I was looking for softness but if you want a heavy dense blanket use the recommended hook size.
